Welcome to the UMMC Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program
The University of Mississippi Medical Center offers a two-year ACGME-accredited Infectious Diseases fellowship with exceptional clinical training, diverse research opportunities, and a supportive, mentorship-driven environment. As the state’s only academic medical center and primary referral center, UMMC provides exposure to a wide range of infectious diseases and patient populations not seen at many institutions nationwide. Our graduates are well-prepared for careers in academic medicine, community infectious diseases practice, hospital epidemiology, transplant ID, HIV medicine and public health.
- Diverse Faculty – In addition to our Mississippi-native faculty with strong institutional memory, we also have faculty born and raised all across the US and abroad, and we have trained at top-notch programs, including Johns Hopkins, Brigham and Women’s, Tufts, London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, University of Pennsylvania, University of Miami, UNC, UAB, Mayo Clinic Rochester and Cleveland Clinic. These varied backgrounds contribute to a diverse and stimulating training environment that produces adaptive and well-rounded trainees.
- Clinical Teaching Opportunities – In addition to rotating internal medicine residents, we also have prelim interns, and medical students, pharmacy students and ID pharmacy residents working on our inpatient consult services. Fellows also teach medical students and residents in clinic, and have opportunities to hone their didactic skills.
- Comprehensive Transplant ID Program – As the only transplant center in Mississippi, we see a large volume of solid organ, BMT and CAR-T patients. Our transplant ID program is directed by physicians with extensive formal fellowship training for managing immunocompromised hosts. We have a dedicated transplant inpatient consult service, as well as clinics for pre- and post-transplant patients.
- Formal Microbiology/Laboratory Diagnostics Curriculum – Led by a faculty member with an additional fellowship training in medical microbiology, our curriculum ensures fellows are ready to navigate the “what, where, when, how and why” of laboratory testing in an age of rapid advances and diagnostic stewardship.
- Comprehensive HIV care – UMMC has a well-funded, superbly-staffed, Ryan White clinic for the care of patients living with HIV. Learning the nuances of providing HIV care is made easier with dedicated staff including pharmacists, case managers, counselors, and patient advocates. Our clinic is home to over 2200 patients and beats national metrics for quality care and services.
- High-Impact Electives – Beyond core inpatient and outpatient training, fellows can tailor electives to their career goals. Options include HIV, STI, TB, Viral Hepatitis, Transplant ID, OPAT, Tropical & Travel Medicine, Wound Care, Peds ID, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Infection Prevention.
- Wellness Initiatives – Our fellows have monthly scheduled check-ins with program leadership, quarterly departmental gatherings with all medicine subspecialties and access to institutional wellness resources including free counseling services.
- Mentored Scholarship – Whether poster abstracts, case reports, quality improvement or original clinical research, our faculty guide fellows successfully through scholarship that matches their goals for their career.
- 10K+ for National Meetings – Fellows have access to more than $10,000 in division-supported funds for national meetings (IDSA, SHEA, CROI, ACP), board review programs, SHEA certification courses, and the “White Coat Investor” financial wellness curriculum.
- Moonlighting Opportunities in Medicine and ID – Fellows in good standing have the option to earn extra money covering an extra weekend of ID call, picking up a hospitalist shift, or covering the local VA hospital.
- Southern Living – Fellows enjoy short commutes, little traffic, a low cost of living, and the hospitality the South is known for. Mississippi offers excellent food, live music, outdoor recreation, and a warm, temperate climate.
